Just Under The Surface

Weºre still not ready to leave Lagos yet. The beaches are great, the water and the rocks are beautiful, and weºre enjoying our cheapest accomodation yet, including a kitchen, which also lends us to having some of our best meals yet. Last night we thought weºd cook up some scallops, but being a little rusty on our Portuguese, weºre not sure what we actually cooked up! They looked like scallops, but thatºs as far as the resemblance went.

Some of the things weºre noticing here now somehow evaded our perception for a long time:
1) A lot of people smoke here. Most, actually. Weºre still trying to adjust to having people smoking around us while we eat, or anything for that matter. Smokers are everywhere.

2) In Lagos, people LOVE their dirtbikes! At night the kids love to scream by (actually theyºre often not going fast, but they sure rev ºem high!) We think that the base of our apartment building is home base for one of the local dirtbike gangs. They usually start revving around 10 pm and go on until about 1 am. Trust me, itºs louder than you think. Theyºre like really high pitched harleys. If youºve ever heard our friend Tomºs impression of a hair dryer, itºs also quite close to that.

3) There are really interesting and unique mosaics on the cobblestone sidewalks here. We noticed them in Lisbon also, but now that weºre on to them, theyºre everywhere.

4) The dogs here are ugly, to our eyes anyways. Theyºre small, fat, wiry haired things and theyºre everywhere. Most are too visibly unneutered. I wish we had a good picture to show you.

5) Laundry can still be done old school. Everybody has laundry hanging out their windows, and Kelsey has been very impressed by it. Now weºve done our own, in true Portuguese style:

Ok, thatºs all for now. Back to the beach for us!

Hi guys, we have just checked in at your blog, you are stirring many memories for us, as we travelled through Portugal in 1970 in a rented Siat, which happened to have a box of eggs in the trunk!! We have just purchased our tickets for Egypt, we will be arriving in Cairo Nov 17th, maybe we will see you there! love Brian and Joan
