The Vertical City

Hong Kong is UP. Everything is up or down. To get from one place to another on the island, you get in an elevator on the ground floor, go up 8 levels, then get out and walk out of the front door on ground level again. Weird! A 3D city. We're staying with our friends Tom and Anne Marie here and so we're getting a great insiders experience.

We've learned that China and Hong Kong are very separate entities, not only politically, but culturally as well. We landed in China at 1:30 am and were rescued there by T & AM and brought to Hong Kong on a series of buses and taxis across various borders and seemingly impossible buraucracy. (Ask us later about getting on a Chinese airplane or lining up at the Chinese embassy) We've been having a lot of fun exploring the 3D matrix of Hong Kong and hanging out with our friends. I learned how to order a fruit drink in Mandarin at the market and even though it was embarrassing and a complete bashing of the words, it worked and I smiled a little too much when the lady handed me my drink. Hong Kong is completely different than any city we've been to yet, and so there are a million things that we can't even begin to describe to you. We love the buses and the constant ferry traffic in the harbour. We love the food, the lights the hills, the fusion. Oh man, the FUSION here. It's great. Stay tuned for more.
